Character Frequency Analyzer
Count how often each character, letter, or word appears in your text — with counts, percentages, and a visual bar chart. Runs entirely in your browser.
About the Character Frequency Analyzer
This tool counts how often each character, letter, or word appears in a piece of text, then displays the results as a sorted table alongside a bar chart. Everything happens locally in your browser — no text is uploaded anywhere. It's handy for cryptography puzzles, language analysis, writing style research, and spotting typos or repeated words.
The three analysis modes
- Characters — Counts every character in the input, including spaces, punctuation, digits, and newlines. Useful for understanding the raw makeup of a string.
- Letters only — Counts only A–Z and a–z (case-insensitive by default). This is the classic frequency analysis used in substitution ciphers and language detection.
- Words — Splits the text on whitespace and punctuation, then counts word occurrences (case-insensitive). Great for finding repeated words or the most common terms in a document.
How to use it
- Paste or type your text into the box.
- Choose an analysis mode from the dropdown.
- Click Analyze to see a frequency table sorted from most to least common, with percentages and a bar chart.
- Click Clear to start over.
Frequently asked questions
Is the text sent to a server? No. The analysis runs entirely in JavaScript on your device. Nothing leaves your browser.
Is letter counting case-sensitive? No. Uppercase and lowercase are combined, so "A" and "a" are counted together as the same letter.
How are words split? Words are split on any non-alphanumeric character, so "don't" counts as two tokens ("don" and "t"). For most prose this is a reasonable approximation.
Is there a length limit? Only your browser's available memory. Very large documents may take a moment to analyze but will work fine.
